Verecloud Delivers Seamless Billing for Cloud Services with jBilling

Founded in 2006, Verecloud is a cloud services broker that provides a range of cloud-based software to small businesses across the United States. In 2011, Verecloud launched Cloudwrangler, a web-based marketplace of best-of-breed cloud services—including Microsoft Sharepoint, MozyPro, and GlobalMeet—integrated into a single experience for easy use and management. The company sells directly to customers and also works with a network of about 1,000 value-added resellers and agents to distribute its services. Verecloud is headquartered Englewood, Colorado.

Challenge

For end-user customers, simplicity may be one of cloud computing’s biggest selling points. For cloud services providers, on the other hand, achieving that simplicity can be much harder than it seems. “What’s unique about cloud-based services is that each one has different characteristics and requirements,” says Dave Loomis, Vice President of Technology Services at Verecloud. “You might be dealing with infrastructure, platform, or software as a service, all of which can be provisioned in a variety of different ways.”

As Loomis points out, the complicated nature of cloud services can be particularly daunting when it comes to billing. “Cloudwragler provides apps that either offer or support each of these different models,” he says. “Before we launched, we knew we needed a robust billing system would give us the confidence to know that, regardless of which service we were integrating with, we would be able to charge for it appropriately.”

Given that Verecloud has multiple sales channels, including a large and growing network of value-added resellers (VARs) and agents, the company needed a billing solution that could handle this added complexity. “Our system had to support wholesale, direct-to-customer billing as well as the billing model we set up for various relationships in the channel,” says Loomis. With these aims in mind, the Verecloud team began to look for a solution that would be able to meet the company’s requirements.

Verecloud engaged in a rigorous search process to find the ideal billing solution for its platform. “Most of our management team has a background in the telecom industry, so we knew which functionalities to look for,” Loomis says. “We evaluated several solutions, including telecom-specific packages, but in the end, jBilling was the only option that would give us both the functionality and the flexibility we needed.”

For the Verecloud team, jBilling’s robust APIs were a key factor in its decision. “Good APIs are central to the effective delivery of cloud services, so finding a billing solution with a cohesive set of APIs was critical for us,” says Loomis. “jBilling’s APIs not only enable us to handle complex cloud billing with ease, but also make the process seamless for end-user customers, VARs, and agents alike.”

With jBilling at the core of its Cloudwrangler platform, Verecloud is able to provide a range of cloud services that are easy to distribute and offer a seamless experience for end users. “Our platform does all of the provisioning, monitoring, and usage collection, so we have a full BSS/OSS system that’s running all of the business and operational support,” says Loomis. “jBilling is a key component of the system we’ve created.”
